The ever inventive ladies came up with the perfect way to fold and press and exact 1/4"" on Saturday! Using a sheet of graph paper that is sectioned into 1/4" rows! lay the fabric down on the ironing board, put the graph paper on top and fold over the fabric edge to meet the 1/4" line on the paper and press!!
Binding Under Control!
At last! I have found a method of controlling the binding as I am sewing it on! I have tried so many other methods however this one is a "Keeper"! I cut a 3 inch piece of cardboard tube and wrapped the binding onto it. by putting it between the cords on my sewing table it sits there calmly and with a small tug a little more is fed out as required! You might like to give it a try. I have in the past put it in a can on the floor, when the phone rang I found my feet all tied up! I tried it wrapped on my wrist ...once again attached, wouldn't come off easily when I wanted it to, and reeled off on it own when I didn't want it to! I have tried just throwing it over my shoulder, or on my lap...comes to the sewing area twisted and tangled! Yep ! This is the "BEST WAY" I have found so far!
QUICK TIPS!
GOING DOWN THE STRAIGHT and NARROW!:**** to make straight lines for quilting, instead of drawing with pencil or disappearing ink, try using some "blue" painters tape. It doesn't leave the fabric sticky so I don't have to wash it out afterward!
PIN FLICK! : Okay now ... have you ever tired of pulling pins out and "placing" them on your magnetic pin cushion? A quilter suggested that if you place the magnetic pin cushion behind your machine ans as you come to a pin, just "flick it off" onto the pin cushion. You don't even have to aim!
SHARPS SAFTEY! : After visiting my local Dr. and seeing the "used sharps" container in the exam room a light came on! When I returned home, I went in search of a small container. I Found a old used Pill container with a plastic top. I drilled a small hole in the cap, and then placed a bright label on it that says "used sharps". Now I safely dispose of any of my broken needles, or bent pins right through the hole in the top of the bottle. If I need to through out my rotary cutter blade I just remove the cap and pop it in side. When the container is full I can dispose of it safely . I no longer have to fear gathering up the garbage bin from my sewing room!
QUILTERS MATH! : Recommended hights. Sewing Machine Bed height to the floor -- 30 inches. Cutting Table Surface to the floor --36 inches or to your hip bone. Half Square Triangles - Finished size + 7/8". Quarter Square Triangles Finished size +1 1/4 inch. 1 meter of Quilt Fabric weighs approx. 4 oz. One pound of Quilt Fabric is approx. 4 yards. A size "Full" Scrap Quilt uses about 2 lbs. of fabric pieces.
RIGHTY - TIGHTY! -- Okay, you know that your thread tension is out, "But which way should I turn my tension adjustor?". A simple way to remember is that whenever you want to adjust your tension, this simple rule applies .. Righty Tighty .. therefore, to Tighten the tension turn the upper tension knob to the right, (or the bobbin screw to the right) If you want to Loosen Tension ... turn the upper tension adjustor to the left, or the bobbin screw to the left. Also remember .. Make small adjustments! Also for more information on how to know if your bobbin tension is correct and how to resolve it, visit the Bobbin Tension Link on this page!
OOPS! STICKY IRON! : We have all done it at sometime,..yep pressed the Sticky Side of "steam a seam" or "heat and bond"! What to do? Well I keep a Salt Shaker in my sewing room just for these times! Leave the iron on, sprinkle about 1 Tblsp. of salt directly onto your ironing board, and "iron" it! Keep ironing the salt until all the Sticky Glue is off of your iron bottom! (You may need to gather the salt up into a bunch a couple of times) When your bottom is clean, brush the salt off of your ironing board, and return to your project!

THE CHRISTMAS QUILT by Jennifer Chiaverini
Another "Elm Creek Quilts Novel" --A lovely book to curl up with on a chilly winter evening! Let your imagination take you back to Christmas of past. Of family gatherings , and a Quilt that was always intended to be finished but never quite made it yet.... Stowed away in a old trunk in the attic until an energetic, young woman found it and brought it back into the light! This quilts story was soon to be realized that it spans several generations of the family from the Great Depression, World War II and on. A very nice read, and at only 225 pages it is not overwhelming in size! The inside cover of the book illustrates the 12 christmas blocks that form this "Christmas Quilt" --The Feathered Star ; Star of Bethlehem, Shepherd's Light, and Christmas Cactus to name just a few.
